The first local Pakistani Catholic bishop, John Joseph, shot himself in front of the courthouse in May 1998 after a Christian was found guilty of blasphemy and given a death sentence. Bishop Joseph serves as the focal point of this book, which chronicles the history of Christians in Pakistan. It tells the story of outcasts who turned to Christianity for hope but are now victims of Pakistan's fight to define Islam. The vast majority of Christians in Pakistan are descended from untouchables who became Christians in the late 1800s. Despite the Muslim majority's disassociation from all things Hindu and Indian, a minority religion in Pakistan is associated with poor status, maintaining the Indian Hindu caste system. Enculturation in Pakistan is another topic covered in the book.
